Easter is here!

Ready to find out all bout Easter? Keep reading!

Easter is one of the major festivals in the UK and it is full of customs, folklore, and traditional food! It occurs at a different time each year, any Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th.

Not only is Easter the end of winter, it is also the end of Lent (a time of fasting in the Christian calendar). It is therefore a time for fun and celebration!

The Friday before Easter Sunday and the Monday after are a bank holiday in the UK. Over Easter, schools close for two weeks there.

Easter Eggs

Easter eggs are a symbol of spring and new life and a very old tradition! Exchanging and eating them is a popular custom in many countries. In the UK, before they were replaced by chocolate, Easter eggs were real chicken eggs. The eggs were hard-boiled and dyed in different colours and patterns. Bright colours represent spring and light.

"Egg rolling" is a traditional game in which real eggs are rolled against one another or down a hill. The owner of the egg that stays uncracked the longest is the winner!

Another game is "egg tapping". You can hold an egg in the palm of the hand and bang against your opponent's egg. The loser is the one whose egg breaks first.

Nowadays people give each other chocolate Easter eggs, usually filled with sweets. In Britain children hunt for chocolate Easter eggs hidden by the Easter bunny around the house or garden.

Easter Bunny

The bunny is the symbol of Easter and it seems to have its origins in Germany. Rabbits are a symbol of fertility! However, Easter bunny (rabbit) may actually be an Easter hare. The hare was allegedly the companion of the ancient Moon goddess. In the UK children believe that if they behave "Easter Bunny " will leave chocolate eggs for them.

Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns, now eaten throughout the Easter season, were first baked in England to be served on Good Friday. They are small and sweet buns with fruit inside, such as raisins or berries. Before baking, a cross is made on top of the bun. After baking, some sugar icing is used to fill this cross.

An old rhyme was often sung by children awaiting their sugary treat:

"Hot cross buns,
hot cross buns,
one a penny, two a penny,
hot cross buns.

Give them to your daughters,
give them to your sons.
One a penny, two a penny,
hot cross buns."

Morris Dancing

Morris dancing is a traditional English form of folk dance which is also performed in other English-speaking countries such as the USA and Australia. The roots of morris dancing seem to be very old, probably dating back to the Middle Ages.

Now you have enough information about Easter. It's time to play!

Have a nice day!

St. Patrick's day!

Morning to everyone!
Today is St. Patrick's day, a very special one for the Irish culture! In the following video you can find out who St. Patrick was.

In the next video you can see many interesting facts related to this special day and how it is celebrated all over the world!

Apart from that, there is another important figure that is worth mentioning. I am talking about leprechauns!

In Irish folklore, leprechauns are a type of fairy depicted as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who partake in mischief. They are solitary creatures who make and mend shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! If they are captured by a human, they grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. Here you can watch and listen to a catchy song about them!

Besides, if you feel like it, you can follow the instructions given in the next video so you can create your own Leprechaun!

Finally, click on the following pot of gold if you feel like playing online games about St. Patrick's day!
I hope you enjoy St. Patrick's day!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Hi there!

Did you know that Santa's Reindeer names are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph? Here you have a song about the most famous one!

Lyrics

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen.
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
the most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!

Hope you like it!

"Christmas without you" by Ava Max

Morning to everyone!

Today we are going to work on a Christmas song. Before listening, here you have an online activity to practise some of the words that appear in the lyrics. Ready?

Now it is time to listen to the song! As you know, songs help us improve both our listening and speaking skills.

In case you are following this class from home, in the following link you can download the worksheet to fill the gaps. Good luck!

Finally, here you can have a look at the lyrics and check your worksheets:

Lights on the trees under falling snow
You get a bit closer when a winter's cold
Now I can't wait 'til you're by my side
All of the best gifts, you just can't buy

Wherever you go, you light up the room
I hope that you'll make it back home soon
'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you

I wish we were kissing under mistletoe
The stars on the sky just can't match your glow
Now I can't wait 'til you're by my side
We'll be warm by the fire all night, ohh

I wanna hold you while the bells are all ringing
Want you to be here while the angel's singing
Days are perfect when I got you near
My only wish is you here

Wherever you go, you light up the room
I hope that you'll make it back home soon
'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you
Wherever you are, you brighten the Moon
I hope that you'll make it back home soon
'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you
(Without you)

We could be outside dancing on the moonlight
Watching the sky roll over our heads
We could be inside trying to sing the lines right
Laughing until we fall out of bed
So when I wake up on Christmas Day
I hope the first thing I see is your face

Wherever you go, you light up the room
I hope that you'll make it back home soon
'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you
Wherever you are, you brighten the Moon
I hope that you'll make it back home soon
'Cause it won't feel like Christmas without you
(Without you)

It won't feel like Christmas without you.

Hope you like it!

Prepositions: Across vs. Through

Hi there!

As I told you, here you have some extra resources in order to fully understand the difference between "across" and "through". First of all, let's watch this video, it's very illustrative!

Besides, the following image will help you to notice the difference between them:

Finally, here you have a written explanation in case you need further information about them:

a. Movement: When we talk about movement from one side to another but ‘in something’, such as long grass or a forest, we use through instead of across:

- I love walking through the forest. (through stresses being in the forest as I walk)

- When my dog runs through long grass, it’s difficult to find him. (through stresses that the dog is in the grass)

b. Time: When referring to a period of time from start to finish, American English speakers often use through where British English speakers say from … to/till …:

- The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 am–5 pm. (preferred British form: from Monday to Friday)

I hope you find this useful. See you in class!

The World Book Day is almost here!

Morning to everyone!

See you in class!
